Stellar: a complete guide
What is Stellar
Stellar (XLM) is a payments network founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim and supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. XLM (lumens) is its native asset.
How Stellar works
Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, in which trusted validators confirm transactions every few seconds without mining. Banks and payment companies ("anchors") issue tokenized fiat currencies on the network.
What Stellar is used for
XLM pays network fees and is used for cross-border remittances, micro-payments and conversion between assets issued on Stellar.
Sending and receiving XLM
Stellar addresses start with G. Most exchanges require a Memo when you deposit — without it the funds may not be credited. Each account must hold a minimum balance of XLM.
Where to store Stellar
XLM is supported by wallets such as LOBSTR and by hardware wallets.
Risks and things to know
A missing Memo is the most common problem. XLM's price depends on adoption of the network by payment companies.
