Zcash: a complete guide
What is Zcash
Zcash (ZEC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2016 by the team led by Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn. It was the first widely used coin to apply zero-knowledge proofs, allowing transactions that are verified without revealing their details.
How Zcash works
Zcash has two kinds of addresses: transparent ones, which work like Bitcoin, and shielded ones, where the sender, recipient and amount are encrypted with zk-SNARK proofs. Blocks are produced about every 75 seconds with Proof of Work (Equihash), and the supply is capped at 21 million.
What Zcash is used for
ZEC is used for payments where the user chooses the level of privacy: an open transfer for transparency or a shielded transfer for confidentiality.
Sending and receiving ZEC
Transparent addresses start with t1, while unified and shielded addresses start with u1 or zs. Many exchanges accept only transparent addresses, so check which type the recipient supports before sending.
Where to store Zcash
Modern wallets such as Zashi or YWallet support shielded funds; some hardware wallets support transparent ZEC.
Risks and things to know
Shielded transfers are not supported everywhere, and the coin has lower liquidity than the market leaders. The price is volatile.
