What a halving is

A halving is a rule built into Zcash: every 1,680,000 blocks the reward for a new block is cut in half. It slows down the issue of new ZEC until the maximum supply of 21 M ZEC is reached.

After the Blossom upgrade in December 2019 the Zcash block time dropped from 150 to 75 seconds: the reward per block was halved to keep the issue rate (12.5 ZEC per 150 seconds became 6.25 ZEC per 75 seconds), and the halving interval doubled, so halvings still happen about every four years.

How the date is estimated

The date is calculated from the number of blocks left and the average block time over the last 24 hours (~1.3 min). Blocks are found at a random pace, so the estimate shifts by a few days: the halving happens at block 4,406,400, not on a fixed date.
