What a halving is

A halving is a rule built into Bitcoin: every 210,000 blocks the reward for a new block is cut in half. It slows down the issue of new BTC until the maximum supply of 21 M BTC is reached.

How the date is estimated

The date is calculated from the number of blocks left and the average block time over the last 24 hours (~9.6 min). Blocks are found at a random pace, so the estimate shifts by a few days: the halving happens at block 1,050,000, not on a fixed date.
