Polygon: a complete guide
What is Polygon
POL (formerly MATIC) is the token of the Polygon ecosystem. Polygon started in 2017 as a scaling solution for Ethereum; in 2024 MATIC was upgraded to POL.
How Polygon works
Polygon PoS is an Ethereum-compatible chain secured by validators who stake POL. It offers fast blocks and very low fees, and assets can be bridged between Polygon and Ethereum.
What Polygon is used for
POL pays gas on Polygon PoS and is staked by validators. Polygon hosts payment apps, games, DeFi protocols and tokenized assets.
Sending and receiving POL
Polygon addresses start with 0x, the same as Ethereum. Make sure the recipient supports Polygon; a transfer costs a fraction of a cent in POL.
Where to store Polygon
POL can be kept in MetaMask and other EVM wallets and on hardware wallets.
Risks and things to know
Old MATIC balances on some platforms may need migration to POL. The price depends on adoption of Polygon.
