Kraken and the London Stock Exchange to Bring 100 Leading UK Stocks Onchain Through xStocks

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) and Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken, have announced a partnership that will bring shares of 100 of the largest UK-listed companies to blockchain networks through the xStocks platform.

The launch is expected in the coming weeks. Each tokenized stock will be backed by the corresponding underlying share on a 1:1 basis, giving investors exposure to some of the United Kingdom’s largest public companies through blockchain infrastructure.

The initiative connects traditional equity markets with the onchain environment and represents one of the most notable examples of a major regulated financial marketplace using tokenization to modernize access to securities.

xStocks Will Be Backed by Real UK Shares

Each xStock will represent a blockchain-based version of a specific share listed on the London Stock Exchange. Every token issued will be backed one-to-one by the corresponding underlying equity.

The key difference from traditional stock markets is that tokenized assets could potentially trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rather than only during standard exchange trading hours.

Users will be able to access xStocks through centralized trading platforms, hold the tokens in self-custody wallets, and interact with them through compatible onchain applications.

At the same time, the tokens will continue to track the value of the underlying shares, combining exposure to traditional public companies with the portability and technological capabilities of blockchain-based assets.

Tokenization Could Transform Traditional Stock Market Infrastructure

In traditional equity markets, transactions usually pass through several layers of infrastructure. Brokers, custodians, clearing houses, and other intermediaries may all be involved before final settlement is completed.

Tokenized assets could potentially simplify parts of this process. With compatible infrastructure, a digital representation of a share can move between wallets and platforms much faster than through conventional settlement systems.

Blockchain technology can also make these assets transferable outside normal market hours and allow them to interact with other digital financial services.

This could improve market accessibility and capital efficiency. However, holders of tokenized stocks will still remain subject to the legal, custody, and regulatory frameworks governing the issuance, backing, and transfer of such instruments.

Payward Continues to Rapidly Expand the xStocks Platform

The partnership with the London Stock Exchange significantly expands the existing xStocks ecosystem, which has already recorded substantial trading activity.

According to Payward, cumulative xStocks trading volume has exceeded $40 billion.

Around $20 billion of that volume was settled directly through blockchain infrastructure. This indicates that a significant share of activity is already taking place onchain rather than exclusively through traditional trading and settlement systems.

The number of xStocks holders has also surpassed 200,000, highlighting growing investor interest in tokenized versions of traditional financial assets.

UK Equities Join the Broader Global RWA Trend

Adding shares of the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange will significantly expand the range of traditional assets available on blockchain networks.

The project comes amid broader growth in the Real-World Assets (RWA) sector, where stocks, bonds, funds, commodities, and other instruments from traditional financial markets are increasingly being tokenized.

One of the main advantages of tokenization is the ability to make these assets more portable and programmable. Tokens can potentially be used across different financial applications, transferred between compatible platforms, and integrated with other parts of digital financial infrastructure.

The involvement of the LSE is particularly important because the project is not simply a crypto company issuing digital representations of shares. It also involves one of the world’s best-known and most established stock market operators.

Kraken Strengthens Its Position in Tokenized Equities

For Kraken and Payward, the addition of UK-listed shares could become an important step in expanding xStocks beyond the markets already supported by the platform.

xStocks is gradually evolving into infrastructure through which traditional securities can become available in blockchain format and be used across a broader digital financial ecosystem.

Self-custody is another particularly important feature. Unlike the traditional model, where shares are usually held through brokerage or custodial accounts, tokenized versions can potentially be stored directly in compatible Web3 wallets.

This creates a new way of interacting with securities by giving investors greater technical flexibility in how they manage assets. However, the legal ownership structure and rights of token holders will still depend on the terms of each specific tokenized product.

Tokenization Is Bringing Traditional Exchanges and Onchain Markets Closer Together

The partnership between the London Stock Exchange and Payward shows how quickly the gap between traditional capital markets and blockchain infrastructure is narrowing.

Only a few years ago, tokenized stocks were largely viewed as experimental products offered by crypto companies. Today, major exchanges and institutional financial infrastructure providers are beginning to participate in similar projects.

If the initiative succeeds, investors could gain more flexible access to leading UK companies, while LSE and Payward could demonstrate a model in which traditional equities operate simultaneously within conventional exchange infrastructure and the onchain economy.

Over time, similar solutions could become an important part of the global tokenized asset market, where stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments are increasingly combined with blockchain technology, around-the-clock trading, and digital self-custody.
