What is Avalanche
Avalanche (AVAX) is a smart contract platform developed by Ava Labs; its main network launched in 2020. It is designed for fast finality and for launching custom blockchains.
How Avalanche works
Avalanche uses its own Proof of Stake consensus family with finality in about a second. The network has several chains: the C-Chain is compatible with Ethereum, the X-Chain handles asset transfers and the P-Chain coordinates validators. Transaction fees are burned, and the supply is capped at 720 million AVAX.
What Avalanche is used for
AVAX pays fees, is staked by validators and is used in DeFi and games on Avalanche.
Sending and receiving AVAX
On the C-Chain addresses start with 0x like on Ethereum; X-Chain addresses start with X-avax1. The two are not interchangeable — check which chain the recipient uses.
