What to know about Tether and USD Coin
Tether (USDT)
Tether (USDT) is the largest stablecoin: a token designed to stay at one US dollar. It was launched in 2014 by Tether Limited, which issues USDT against reserves that consist mostly of cash equivalents and short-term US Treasury bills.
Sending and receiving USDT
The key choice is the network. USDT on TRON is popular for its low fees and speed, ERC20 is supported almost everywhere but costs more in gas, while Solana, TON and BEP20 are cheap alternatives. The recipient address must belong to the same network you send on, and you need the network's native coin (TRX, ETH, BNB…) to pay the fee from your own wallet.
USD Coin (USDC)
USD Coin (USDC) is a dollar stablecoin issued by Circle since 2018. Each token is backed by reserves held in cash and short-term US Treasuries, and the reserve composition is regularly reported by the issuer.
Risks and things to know
USDC depends on the issuer and its banking partners, and the issuer can block tokens on specific addresses. In March 2023 USDC briefly traded below one dollar when part of the reserves was held at a failed US bank.
BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) network
BEP20 is the token standard on BNB Smart Chain, an Ethereum-compatible network. Addresses look like Ethereum addresses, and fees are paid in BNB and are usually low.
Arbitrum One network
Arbitrum One is an Ethereum layer-2 network. Addresses use the Ethereum format, fees are paid in ETH and are much lower than on the Ethereum mainnet.

What to check before exchanging USDT BEP20 to USDC Arbitrum
- The recipient address must be on the Arbitrum One network: funds sent on another network may be lost.
- The amount sent must be at least 200 USDT BEP20.
- Copy the whole address and check the first and last characters after pasting.
- Addresses on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB Smart Chain and Polygon look the same (0x…): make sure the wallet shows Arbitrum One as the network.
- To move USDC on Arbitrum One later, you will need a little ETH on the same address.
- Funds go through an AML check; high-risk transfers may be held until the check is complete.
