Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralized storage network developed by Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS. Its main network launched in 2020.
How Filecoin works
Storage providers earn FIL for storing data and prove that they keep it with Proof of Replication and Proof of Spacetime. The network also supports smart contracts through its Ethereum-compatible virtual machine (FEVM). The maximum supply is 2 billion FIL.
What Filecoin is used for
FIL is used to pay for storage and retrieval of data, as collateral by storage providers and in applications built on the network.
