What to know about Bitcoin and Cosmos
Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency. It was described in a 2008 white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in January 2009. Bitcoin has no issuer or central operator: the rules are enforced by thousands of independent nodes, and the supply is capped at 21 million coins.
Sending and receiving BTC
Bitcoin addresses start with 1, 3 or bc1. The fee depends on how busy the network is, not on the amount you send, so wallets let you pick a faster or cheaper fee. A payment is usually treated as final after several confirmations; each new block adds one, so a transfer takes from about 10 minutes to an hour.
Cosmos (ATOM)
Cosmos (ATOM) is the coin of the Cosmos Hub, the first chain of the Cosmos ecosystem, launched in 2019. Cosmos is often called the "internet of blockchains".
What Cosmos is used for
ATOM is used for staking, governance and fees on the Cosmos Hub, and moves between Cosmos chains via IBC.
How to exchange Bitcoin to Cosmos
- Enter the BTC amount in the calculator (minimum 0.003 BTC) and click “Go to exchange”.
- Enter your ATOM wallet address on the Cosmos Hub network and your contact details. If you receive to an exchange, add the Memo.
- Send exactly the specified amount of BTC on the Bitcoin network to the details shown in the order.
- Once the transfer is confirmed, Cosmos is sent to your address. You can track the order on its status page.
What to check before exchanging BTC to ATOM
- The recipient address must be on the Cosmos Hub network: funds sent on another network may be lost.
- If the recipient wallet requires a Memo, be sure to include it in the order.
- The amount sent must be at least 0.003 BTC.
- Copy the whole address and check the first and last characters after pasting.
- Funds go through an AML check; high-risk transfers may be held until the check is complete.
