What to know about Tether and USD Coin
Tether (USDT)
Tether (USDT) is the largest stablecoin: a token designed to stay at one US dollar. It was launched in 2014 by Tether Limited, which issues USDT against reserves that consist mostly of cash equivalents and short-term US Treasury bills.
Sending and receiving USDT
The key choice is the network. USDT on TRON is popular for its low fees and speed, ERC20 is supported almost everywhere but costs more in gas, while Solana, TON and BEP20 are cheap alternatives. The recipient address must belong to the same network you send on, and you need the network's native coin (TRX, ETH, BNB…) to pay the fee from your own wallet.
USD Coin (USDC)
USD Coin (USDC) is a dollar stablecoin issued by Circle since 2018. Each token is backed by reserves held in cash and short-term US Treasuries, and the reserve composition is regularly reported by the issuer.
Where to store USD Coin
Any wallet that supports the network and the official USDC contract will do; hardware wallets are the safest option for large amounts.
TRON (TRC20) network
TRC20 is the token standard on the TRON network. Transfers are fast, and the fee is paid in TRX or with staked energy — it is usually lower than on Ethereum, which makes TRC20 the most popular network for USDT.
Optimism network
Optimism is an Ethereum layer-2 network. Addresses use the Ethereum format and fees are paid in ETH at a fraction of mainnet cost.
How to exchange Tether to USD Coin
- Enter the USDT TRC20 amount in the calculator (minimum 200 USDT TRC20) and click “Go to exchange”.
- Enter your USDC wallet address on the Optimism network and your contact details.
- Send exactly the specified amount of USDT TRC20 on the TRON (TRC20) network to the details shown in the order.
- Once the transfer is confirmed, USD Coin is sent to your address. You can track the order on its status page.
What to check before exchanging USDT TRC20 to USDC Optimism
- The recipient address must be on the Optimism network: funds sent on another network may be lost.
- The amount sent must be at least 200 USDT TRC20.
- Copy the whole address and check the first and last characters after pasting.
- Addresses on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB Smart Chain and Polygon look the same (0x…): make sure the wallet shows OP Mainnet (Optimism) as the network.
- To move USDC on OP Mainnet (Optimism) later, you will need a little ETH on the same address.
- Funds go through an AML check; high-risk transfers may be held until the check is complete.
