What is Hedera
Hedera (HBAR) is a public network launched in 2019 and based on the hashgraph algorithm invented by Leemon Baird. It is governed by a council of large companies and organizations.
How Hedera works
Instead of a chain of blocks, Hedera uses hashgraph consensus (asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance) with finality in a few seconds. Fees are fixed in US-dollar terms and paid in HBAR. The maximum supply is 50 billion HBAR.
What Hedera is used for
HBAR pays for transactions, token services and smart contracts on Hedera and is staked to secure the network. Businesses use Hedera for payments, tokenization and data logging.
Sending and receiving HBAR
Hedera accounts have IDs in the format 0.0.123456. Exchanges often require a Memo with deposits. Transfers are fast and cost a tiny, predictable fee.
