What is Ethereum (ETH)?

Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform and cryptocurrency created as a “world computer” for running smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). Unlike Bitcoin, which focuses mainly on the function of “digital money,” Ethereum provides a full infrastructure layer for DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, and other Web3 services.

The basic unit of the network is the Ether (ETH) token. It is used to pay transaction fees (gas), participate in staking, and serve as collateral in DeFi protocols. Every smart contract and transaction in the network “costs” a certain amount of gas, which encourages efficient use of network resources and protects it from spam.

Previously, Ethereum used the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus algorithm, but after The Merge upgrade it migrated to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). Now the network’s security is provided by validators who lock (stake) ETH, attest blocks, and receive rewards in ETH. This approach reduces energy consumption, makes the network more environmentally friendly, and creates conditions for further scalable upgrades.

You can obtain ETH in several ways: buy it on an exchange, use P2P services, accept payments in ETH for goods and services, participate in staking, or use DeFi platforms. It is recommended to store the asset in secure crypto wallets — hot wallets (mobile and web wallets) for convenience or cold wallets (hardware and offline wallets) for maximum protection.

Due to high volatility, the price of ETH can change significantly over time. The token is used for long-term investments and participation in the Ethereum ecosystem, as well as for active trading and yield generation in DeFi.

Why Ethereum matters

  • Smart contracts and dApps

Ethereum became the first large-scale platform for launching smart contracts and decentralized applications. DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, blockchain games, and DAOs are all being built on top of it.

  • Decentralization and security

The network is supported by thousands of validators and nodes worldwide. All transactions and smart contracts are permanently recorded on the blockchain and can be verified by any user.

  • Financial and technological Web3 infrastructure

ETH serves not only as an investment asset but also as “fuel” for an entire ecosystem: from DeFi and staking to NFTs and L2 solutions. This makes Ethereum a key piece of infrastructure for the new internet of value.

Short-term 30-day price forecast for Ethereum (ETH)

The short-term dynamics of ETH depend on macroeconomic conditions, institutional adoption news, the development of DeFi and the L2 ecosystem, as well as the behavior of large holders and network validators. The base scenario assumes trading within key support and resistance levels with periodic attempts to break local highs.

When was Ethereum (ETH) created?
Ethereum (ETH) was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, and the network was officially launched in July 2015 by a team of developers including Vitalik Buterin, Gavin Wood, and others. The launch of Ethereum is considered the starting point of the smart contract and decentralized application era, which radically expanded blockchain use cases beyond simple value transfers.
What backs Ethereum?
Ethereum as a network and the ETH token are not backed by gold, fiat currency, or any other physical asset. The value of ETH is driven by supply and demand, user confidence, network usage, and Ethereum’s role in the broader Web3 ecosystem.

After the transition to Proof-of-Stake and the introduction of fee-burning mechanisms (such as EIP-1559), a portion of ETH is constantly removed from circulation. Under high network load, this can create a potentially deflationary or supply-neutral model. Importantly, Ethereum is not controlled by any single bank or government — the network is maintained by validators and thousands of independent nodes.

What is Ethereum staking?
Ethereum staking is the process of locking ETH to help secure the network and validate transactions in the Proof-of-Stake model. Instead of hardware mining, validators deposit ETH as collateral, run a node, and participate in block production.

For correct behavior, validators receive rewards in ETH, while protocol violations or attempted attacks can lead to part of their stake being “slashed.” In this way, staking: – helps protect the network; – provides ETH holders with passive income; – incentivizes long-term holding and strengthens the ecosystem’s stability.

How does Ethereum work?
Ethereum is built on blockchain technology and the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which executes smart contracts and decentralized application code.

When you send ETH or interact with a smart contract: – a transaction is created and broadcast to the network; – it enters the mempool and waits to be included in a block; – validators sеlect transactions, verify their correctness, and add them to a new block; – after confirmation, the block is added to the blockchain and the transaction becomes irreversible.

Every operation requires a fee paid in gas, denominated in ETH. This helps regulate network load and aligns economic incentives for users and validators. Thanks to smart contracts, Ethereum can support complex logic: from exchanges and lending protocols to DAOs and NFT marketplaces.

Is Ethereum a good investment?
Many investors view Ethereum as a core asset of the Web3 ecosystem and a key platform for DeFi, NFTs, and L2 solutions. ETH serves as “fuel” for smart contracts, collateral in protocols, and a unit of account in decentralized finance. After the move to Proof-of-Stake and the introduction of fee burning, ETH’s issuance model has become more sustainable and, under certain conditions, even potentially deflationary.

However, ETH remains a highly volatile asset. Before buying, it is important to: – conduct your own research (DYOR); – assess your risk profile and investment horizon; – invest only funds you are prepared to potentially lose.

Ethereum can be an important part of a diversified crypto portfolio, especially for those who believe in the growth of DeFi and Web3, but it should not be the only or “last-resort” asset you rely on.
