The role of artificial intelligence in finance, commerce, and digital services continues to grow rapidly.

But when autonomous AI agents need to pay for services, they run into a serious problem: they cannot independently open bank accounts or use familiar payment tools that require human involvement. In addition, these agents need transactions that are fast, low-cost, and scalable, while traditional payment systems simply cannot provide the required speed and economic efficiency.

To solve this issue, Coinbase developed x402 — an open web standard for stablecoin payments. This protocol allows autonomous agents and other systems to make payments quickly and with minimal costs, without relying on offline payment infrastructure. Instead of using external and outdated payment models, developers can embed payment mechanisms directly into interactions between machines, servers, and applications. As a result, AI agents gain the ability to pay for access to web content, data, and services using stablecoins.

Since its launch in May 2025, the protocol has already processed hundreds of millions of transactions. Today, more and more platforms from both the Web2 and Web3 worlds are adding x402 to their payment systems. The ecosystem of companies supporting Coinbase’s initiative already includes Cloudflare, Circle, Stripe, and Amazon Web Services. This indicates that the internet is gradually moving toward agentic commerce, where automated participants play an increasingly important role.

How Does x402 Work?

The x402 protocol adds a built-in payment function directly into core internet services and platforms. To do this, a payment request is embedded directly into the normal process of online interaction. To gain access to the desired resource, the user — whether a human or an AI agent — must send a stablecoin payment from their crypto wallet.

This gives developers the ability to place payment gateways directly inside content, data streams, and virtually any kind of web resource.

Historically, such processes have always depended on third-party payment systems. Users had to manage subscriptions, create accounts, enter bank card details, and go through standard access procedures. However, traditional payment methods charge processing fees and impose numerous restrictions, making them inconvenient and economically inefficient for artificial intelligence and micropayments.

Unlike such solutions, x402 is designed from the start for both AI and crypto infrastructure. It combines payment request handling, authentication, and settlement without charging a separate processing fee.

The user pays only the network fee of the selected blockchain, which is often just a fraction of a cent. At the same time, the protocol is not tied to a single network and allows payments through Base, Solana, Ethereum, and other blockchains.

How Payments Work with x402

x402 is built on the HTTP protocol — a set of rules and standards that define interaction between a user’s device and a web server. This means that the logic of x402 is embedded into the familiar “request-response” model used in any internet interaction, but now with an additional payment layer built into the process.

The mechanics look like this.

First, the user sends a request to a web resource. For example, a person may try to open an article, while an AI agent sends an API request to obtain price data from an exchange.

Next, the server generates a payment request specifying which stablecoin is required, how much must be paid, which wallet address should receive the payment, and which network should be used for the transaction. All of these parameters are set by the developer.

Then the user signs the transaction in their crypto wallet and immediately gains access to the requested resource.

On average, the full path — from request to final settlement — takes about two seconds. In effect, this brings the internet closer to a model in which money can move across the web almost as easily and quickly as information does today.

In What Scenarios Can x402 Be Used?

Use Cases for AI Agents

Companies and professionals are increasingly delegating complex tasks to AI agents that previously required human involvement. The x402 protocol expands the capabilities of such agents by allowing them to pay for the services they need on their own, while also making micropayments economically practical.

Below are examples of how this can be used.

Self-funding agents.
Instead of depending on subscription models, AI agents can pay for their own computing resources through micropayments. They can pay for each individual operation, logical inference, or computational step, and then flexibly scale spending up or down depending on the task at hand.

Pay-per-call APIs.
Developers can turn their own APIs and data feeds into pay-as-you-go services. In this case, AI agents access them only when needed and pay for specific requests. This is especially useful when agents need to track important indicators, such as asset prices, logistics parameters, or supply chain data.

Payments for web services.
With x402, agents can pay for access to software, datasets, resource libraries, mail services, private communities, and other digital products.

Machine-to-machine payments.
AI agents can interact directly with one another through x402 frameworks, creating a kind of machine marketplace where one agent pays another for services, data, or digital assets.

Use Cases for Regular Users

Although x402 was created primarily for agent-based and machine payments, people can also benefit from it in meaningful ways.

Optimized web payments open the door to new formats of fractional and flexible online commerce.

Web services with hourly or per-minute billing.
Providers of digital services can move away from rigid subscription models and switch to pay-as-you-go billing through micropayments. For example, a dating service could charge a fraction of a cent per swipe instead of billing a flat $20 per month.

Restricted-access content.
Creators and community owners can monetize content directly on the internet by embedding one-click payment gateways into articles, posts, private groups, and other materials.

Pay-per-view model.
Publishers and media platforms can move away from expensive monthly subscriptions in favor of low-cost payments for individual views. A user would be able to pay for access to a single article instead of subscribing to an entire plan.

Security and privacy.
Payments through x402 make it possible to avoid constantly entering bank account and card details online, while also removing the need for users to create accounts across dozens of different websites, services, and platforms.

What Is the Future of Internet Payments?

Against the backdrop of growing machine-to-machine commerce, more and more large companies have already begun integrating the x402 protocol into their infrastructure.

For example, GPU provider Hyperbolic has implemented x402-based payments for access to reasoning compute, while CoinGecko uses the standard to manage access to on-chain data streams.

Perhaps the most notable development, however, was Stripe’s integration in February 2026. The payment infrastructure company began using the protocol to process payments in the USDC stablecoin for AI agents on the Base network.

Stripe co-founder and president John Collison stated that the coming months and years will bring a true “wave of agentic commerce.”

All of these developments point toward a likely future in which AI agents act ever more autonomously: trading independently, earning money, purchasing digital services, and even building e-commerce business processes without direct human involvement.
